                          Warrnambool

For more than two decades, Deakin's been a major part of Warrnambool.?As the largest higher education provider, we are involved in a number of public initiatives to enhance educational opportunities.

We take a leadership role in projects that strengthen the local economy, environment and culture. We aim to ensure the growth and success of Warrnambool and its community.

                          Our history in Warrnambool

Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education was established in 1970 and was the first provider of higher education in the Warrnambool area.

Twenty years later, the institute merged with Deakin University to form the Deakin Warrnambool Campus, further cementing Deakin's commitment to provide accessible higher education in regional Victoria.

Since that time, Deakin has become a major contributor to the local economy and continues to expand its civic role in the community.

                          Our partnerships inspire young scientists

Deakin's School of Education and the School of Life and Environmental Science partnered with Warrnambool East Primary School to help its students develop a love of science.

Using a combination of technology, excursions to wetlands, visits to coastal areas and in-classroom activities, this award-winning program has improved academic results across the whole curriculum.

Saving the world one penguin at a time

The Middle Island Maremma Project is just one example of the way Deakin's research and ongoing funding is having a significant impact on environmental sustainability and the Warrnambool community.

After a Deakin study uncovered potential threats to a little penguin colony, the introduction of guard dogs to the island and its closure to the public meant an opportunity for the colony to repopulate and guarantee its survival.
